Humphrey, SamuelItem REFLECTIONS ON SHADOWING EXPERIENCES AND COMMUNICATION IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS
Lee, Jenny E.The capstone project of the Miami University’s Master of Medical Sciences in Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program works to reflect on the intentional design of the program to bridge the chasm between didactic learning, theoretical discourse, and practical implementation in the clinical context. The aim of this report is to communicate the culminating experience of the BMS program through four different perspectives: “From the Classroom to the Clinic,” “Framing a Clinical Question and Interrogating the Literature,” “Reflection on Effective Communication in Healthcare,” and “Reflection on Psychosocial Determinants of Health.” Through courses deliberately chosen for expanding upon the foundations set in my undergraduate education, I have been introduced to material that has provided me with the building blocks to ask stronger and highly thought-out questions. Outside of the classroom, the program’s requirement in experiential learning has helped to contextualize concepts found in a textbook or PowerPoint presentation to the hospital and has exposed me to sides of medicine I had yet to witness. These include but are not limited to the importance of effective communication in the delivery of healthcare as well as critically considering each patient’s psychosocial determinants of health.Item REFLECTIONS ON MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES AS THERAPY FOR GASTROINTESTINAL POLYPS
Sumner, Christopher EdwardParticipating in the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) graduate program has greatly shaped and contributed to my view of the overall healthcare system while helping me pursue my personal goals. The start of the program consisted of preclinical courses that included “Pharmacology,” “Anatomy,” and “Immunology & Infectious Disease.” It was beneficial to have taken these courses before delving more into the clinical shadowing experiences because I was able to establish a connection between class content and clinical conditions. The curriculum during the fall and spring semesters has helped me expand my current clinical knowledge while learning more about advanced scientific and healthcare topics from a different perspective. By studying material on more of a molecular and physiological level, I am better able to grasp not only information seen in the clinical setting but understand the deeper science behind it as well. Throughout this paper, I provide examples of what I have experienced since joining this program. The overall sections include “Classroom to Clinic,” “Framing a Clinical Question and Interrogating the Literature,” “Reflection on Communication and Healthcare,” and “Reflection on Psychosocial Determinants of Health.” The inclusion of each section serves to demonstrate what I have learned both in the classroom as well as experientially through my shadowing experiences. Ultimately, each section consists of specific components of the BMS program that have allowed me to develop and grow as an individual pursuing a career in healthcare.Item REFLECTIONS OF VARIOUS HEALTHCARE SHADOWING EXPERIENCES WITH A FOCUS ON PHARMACY AND OTOLARYNGOLOGY CLINICS
DeLong, Ashleigh BrookeThe MMSc. in Biomedical Science (BMS) program has supported each student to flourish as a future healthcare provider by offering both didactic and experiential learning. As a BMS student, I have reflected on four aspects of the program that have further solidified my passion for medicine. The first section of this paper applies content learned in the classroom to patient visits observed during clinical shadowing experiences. The second section discusses the importance of patient-provider interactions and the communication within. This section also contains positive and negative examples and potential strategies for future and current healthcare professionals when providing quality, patient-centered healthcare. The third section delves into the medical literature to expand on conditions not discussed in the classroom and therapeutic management of patients with these specific conditions. Finally, the fourth section is a discussion of the impact that psychosocial determinants of health have on the overall health and livelihood of patients and their families. Altogether, this paper is a compilation of knowledge I acquired from the classroom and through shadowing various healthcare providers. Successful completion of this program and the reflections I have described opened my eyes to the intricate layers embedded within the delivery of healthcare. Not only have I developed a holistic view of healthcare, but I have also gained insight into what healthcare niche I feel is best for my personal skill set.Item REFLECTIONS ON MY EXPERIENCES SHADOWING IN AN INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENT CLINIC
King, Mason AndrewSince matriculating in the Master of Medical Science in Biomedical Sciences program I have gained a vast array of knowledge both in the clinic and in the classroom. In my graduate classes I have learned a lot about the procedures and techniques that go into conducting research and how to properly write a grant application. Additionally, I have become much more confident in my ability to present both research of my own and research performed by other scientists in front of a group. Furthermore, I improved my technological literacy of different programs, such as PyMol, commonly used in all areas of research. I have gained considerable insight into physician residency training and the demands of medical school from shadowing different residents in the clinic. I have also been exposed to a variety of unique careers including, but not limited to, the practice of primary healthcare. I have shadowed physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and pharmacists and learned a great deal about the different careers available to me upon graduation. Shadowing different physicians has eased my worries about the difficulty of attending medical school. It also shown me that medicine is an art and more than just the regurgitation of what has been learned in the classroom. It takes strong interpersonal and communication skills to become an effective healthcare provider.Item THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION IN HEALTHCARE: REFLECTIVE INSIGHTS FROM SHADOWING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
Sefah, BelindaMy shadowing experiences created ways in which I was able to explore the healthcare field. In my clinical rotations, I had the unique opportunity to shadow diverse healthcare professionals, including a sports medicine physician, an internal medicine physician, a general surgeon, and a nurse practitioner. Each encounter provided me with a distinct perspective on patient care and the multidisciplinary nature of health services. I came into the program with an interest in the health field, and thus, I am privileged that the experiential learning component offered such comprehensive exposure to different medical specialties. In every health facility I visited, I observed the critical roles these healthcare professionals play and gained insights into integrating the science and the art of medicine. I began to develop the ability to take content learned in the classroom and apply it in the clinical setting. I gained an appreciation for learning how to frame clinical questions so that I can effectively search medical literature to answer these questions. Moreover, I learned also about the impacts of effective communication on patient outcomes and social determinants of health through real-world interactions with teams and patients. These experiences have further fueled my interest in pursuing a medical career.
